First biochar from Icelandic salmon sludge

Our partner Matís showed the first biochar ever made from land-based salmon sludge…

On 8 June, our partner Matís Iceland hosted a seminar aptly named “Shit Happens”, bringing together stakeholders from Iceland’s fast-growing land-based salmon sector, government, the Icelandic Agricultural Advisory Centre, Land and Forest Iceland, and others to review a major OCCAM milestone.

On display: the first biochar ever produced from land-based salmon sludge. Chemical measurements look good, and there is already interest in using the biochar in farming and in the restoration of eroded land.

To mark the occasion, selected guests received a take-away kit with their very own sample. Twelve little jars, one big step towards turning a waste stream into a resource!
